Are the Jays for real?

The only answer possible is "I don't know" although it is tough to see them catching all three of the teams in front of them. However, there are signs of hope. If A.J. Burnett can realize that, even if he's apparently not being showcased for a trade anymore, he's still on display for next year's free agent market, he might pitch every game like he pitched last night's. The great Roy Halladay seems back on form. And while the offence is still pretty darn poor, there's even good news there: the plague of double plays seems to have abated. Here's a list of the numbers of DPs for the Blue Jays at selected points this season:

Games / DPs / Rate per 162 games
36 / 45 / 202.5
47 / 55 / 189.6
66 / 76 / 186.5
106 / 107 / 163.5

The major league record is 174 (set by the 1990 Red Sox), and it looked to be in serious jeopardy for a while there.

Let's hope that Rolen and Overbay can start hitting, and it might be an interesting September.

Jays' offense? In Roy Halladay's last 8 losses, he received the grand total of 13 runs of support.

Fair enough, gentle reader, but there are folks worse off than poor Roy. As of this morning's stats (not including last night's games), the Jays have averaged 3.97 runs/game in his starts. Matt Cain has seen the Giants average 3.13 in his! And lest you think last night's stats change anything, while Roy was losing a game in which he allowed six hits and three earned runs in eight innings, Matt was losing one in which he allowed eight hits (no walks) and ONE earned run!

Besides, in the post-Gibbons period, I count seven starts for Roy and 30 runs scored by the Jays in those starts (again not including last night). Still not great, but better, which was my point....

Yes, but comparing Darfur to Iraq does not make the former a safer place to visit.

Jays won today 6-1. Six runs are pretty good, huh? How about 28 men LOB???? Wow. At least they didn't hit into any DP's today.

Maybe that's it -- all the DPs were their cunning attempt to minimize the LOB so it wasn't so scandalous!

Speaking of scandal, I hope Halladay wins 7 more games so the writers don't forget about him at Cy Young time. To be only 13-8 pitching the way he has is pretty sad.
